Marr Album Collection
Rodney Marr (1919-1997)

Rodney was born at Lismore on 11 Nov 1919 and moved to yamba at a very young age. He was educated at Yamba primary School and Maclean District Rural School.

After a distinguished career in the RAAF during WW2, he returned to yamba to work with his father and brother, Hardy, in the Walter Marr & Co oyster business.

Rodney died on 29 Dec 1997, aged 78 years. He bequethed two photo albums of photographs he had collected during his lifetime depicting riverboats, steamships and shipwrecks, many of which he would have observed on the Clarence River. There are also coloured photographs of Yamba township scenes from the 1930s.

After the first vessel crossed the bar at the Clarence River Heads in 1938, the river was the main "highway" for the next 100 years. Riverboats carried merchandise and people to the various settlements and farms between Copmanhurst and Yamba.

The Museum has a comprehensive collection of photographs of the riverboats obtained from various sources.

The full history is recorded in the PYHS publication "Riverboats of the Clarence" by Stuart Lee where many of the photographs are reproduced.
