About Us

The Port of Yamba Historical Society Inc. was formed in 1982.

Our vision is to serve the community of Yamba as a non-profit making, permanent institution open to the public for the purpose of study, education and enjoyment by acquiring, conserving, researching, communicating and exhibiting the material evidence of the people and environment of Yamba.

Our mission is to increase understanding and knowledge of Yamba and Districts and to preserve the past for future generations.

We are committed to:

•  Excelling in research for current and future generations.

•  Exchanging knowledge with the community, providing opportunities for learning experiences through exhibitions, education programs, publications and other media.

•  Ensuring continuous improvement in the quality of Society and Museum programs and services to meet the needs of visitors.

•  Being publicly accountable in using the community's resources acting In a manner consistent with our mission.

•  Involving members in the development and the programs of the Society and Museum.

•  Being innovative in business practices to advance the Society's goals.

•  Ensuring the Museum is an enjoyable place to work in and visit.

The Museum's information desk is located near the Museum entrance and provides up-to-date details on all exhibitions, activities and events

Group Tours and School Visits

Special arrangements can be made for visiting coach tours and community groups and schools who wish to visit the Museum during and after normal opening hours.

Coaches and Groups requiring morning or afternoon tea during their visit will be charged $8.00 (this includes entry as well as food) otherwise the normal entry fee of $3.00 applies

Unlimited Parking for Coaches

Bookings for these activities are essential

Disability access

Yamba Museum is committed to providing access to exhibitions and activities to people with a disability.

  • All gallery spaces are wheelchair accessible
  • Accessible toilet
  • Wheelchair-accessible parking can be arranged with prior notice

Membership - Who can join ?

Anyone interested in the history and heritage of Yamba and district is invited to apply to join the Society.

Membership is by election at a general meeting of the Society. Full membership begins after formal acceptance at the meeting and payment of the annual subscription.

Annual subscriptions are due upon election and thereafter on the 1st September each year.

Single - $10.00

Double - $15.00

The newsletter ‘Contact' is printed monthly and distributed at the General Meeting. It keeps members up to date with what is happening around the Museum. Members are encouraged to contribute news items, stories or anything of interest to our members.

Volunteering

For people who wish to increase their skills in a particular area of museum work, or would like to increase their network of friends you might like to consider volunteering at the Museum.

Volunteers can work in a number of areas including general clerical duties, collection management, exhibition development, education, public programs, and conservation.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new friends, develop new skills and further enhance employment opportunities.

If you are interested in assisting us with research or have information you believe might be of interest to the wider community please contact the President, or come down to the museum and meet the Volunteers!

Donations


Donations are sought by the Museum. Donations might be in the form of historical artefacts, property or cash. These donations greatly enhance the services provided by the Yamba Museum. The Committee would like to thank the community and local businesses for their generous donations over the years

Research


The Society provides a service for the general public to research enquiries into the history of people, places or events relevant to the Yamba area.

Research Fees 

  • No museum entry charged to researchers
  • Local no-profit voluntary organisations………………………...NO CHARGE

  • School assignments - a CD or kit for Cenotaph and Breakwall topics ……………………………………………………………………………...$ 5.00
  • Adults researching a project with minimal advice ……………………$10.00
  • Family History Research ………………………………………………..$10.00

(Plus hourly charge for any work carried out by Research Officer/Members)

  • Research request by phone/email - advise client of estimate of all costs including postage and handling and request upfront payment
  • Extra charge for all photocopying and printing of photographs according to normal prices
