Yamba Township

Yamba town was officially gazetted in 1885.

Clarence Heads with its dangerous bar soon assumed great commercial importance with settlement, people and supplies moving in and out of the entrance. This led to an influx of workers and the establishment of commercial enterprises needed to provide them with food, shelter and essential services.

Publications for sale include - Yamba Yesterday and An Historical Gazeteer of Old Yamba Town. Please click here for more information and to order the books.

William Ager - the man that saved the town

The display includes photographs of Pippie Beach which became a threat in the 1920's when the sand dunes became unstable because of pedestrian and cattle traffic. The prevailing winds blew the sand and threatened the township.

In the 1930's William Ager intervened through his unorthodox methods to control elements on the beaches and this became a landmark in Australia's environmental history.

The display features photographs and a sand hill built by museum volunteers.
