The event that shocked and changed our nation
In 1965 Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins and twenty-nine other students from Sydney University became known as the Freedom Riders.
Together they travelled from Sydney to county towns in the central west and along the North Coast of NSW. The aim was to make white Australia aware of the racism and shameful living conditions experienced by Aboriginal communities in regional towns. They gained a lot of publicity and some opposition along the way but this did not deter their vision for change.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of that Freedom Ride and will feature in this years Vision4Change exhibition. An assembly of photographs, personal stories and videos will challenge and inspire visitors while imparting a sense of human rights and justice for all.
