Volunteer Profile - Christopher Legg

I came to Yamba in 2016 looking for that 'Sea Change' that we hear about. I found it here in yamba. My parents also lived here so it was an easy choice.

I cared for my parents right up until their passing. Suddenly a lot of time previously occupied was on my hands.

I like recent history and have been a volunteer at the Yamba Museum ever since. It's all about the people who come in the door. They come from near and far. Many of our visitors are from overseas and are always willing to share a story or two. It's like being given a bit of treasure each conversation.

THE SURREAL FEEL - Exhibition

“THE SURREAL FEEL' is opening at the Kirk, in Yamba on the 20th Oct at 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome to free admission. New Surrealist work from Linda Westmorel and Graham Mackie. Graham Mackie is having his 22nd continuous exhibition in Yamba & is stepping outside his usual subject matter to embrace the Surrealist ideals of Ernst, Di Chirico, Dali & Rene Magritte and he says this has been a great challenge to produce work along the lines of this movement which was founded in 1924 by Andre Breton.

Linda Westmoreland is presenting her latest collection of original Surrealist paintings and drawings to the public at the Yamba Kirk from Friday 20th Oct -  Friday 17th November.  These detailed and colourful works have never been released to the public before. A former secondary art teacher, Linda has had a lifetime love and infatuation with Surrealist artists Salvador Dali and Hieronymus Bosch. She has exhibited in most states of Australia and her work can be viewed in many private homes throughout Australia with some international sales as well. All her paintings and drawings are originals with just a glimpse of influence from the famous surrealists masters. Linda has worked with Graham on 2 previous very successful shows, 'Just Pencil' and 'Just Portraits' at the Kirk. Linda Says, “It is always a pleasure and an honour to exhibit with Graham Mackie , he challenges me to improve and further develop my approach to art in all its forms. I am proud to exhibit beside him. The Clarence Valley is lucky to have such a knowledgeable and generous arts senior in our midst. Anyone who wishes to have a country drive should take the time to visit the 'Coombadjha Studio gallery'. It's well worth it.

Linda resides in our local river village, Lawrence, and facilitates 'the Lawrence Art Group' on Tuesday mornings and Sundays in her working studio/gallery, 'Artisans Corner Australia'. Linda does private tuition but has a firm policy that all artists must make their own marks on a surface and not simply copy another souls journey. Learn more at the show on opening night or find out when Linda or Graham will be available to talk with over the duration of The Surreal Feel Exhibition This professional art Exhibition is worth the visit, the time, and is just that little bit different.

The photo is of a picnic party at Yamba Point c1896. Mr and Mrs Horace Harding of Grafton with daughters Mildred (b 1884) and Elma (b 1893). Mrs Helene Ehlers with her two daughters, Agnes (b 1888) and Elsa (b 1890). It was photographed by Helene’s husband, Mr Carl Ehlers, who was a Grafton photographer for about 10 years between 1887 and 1897.

This photograph would have been taken shortly before Ehlers left the district and returned to Germany.

The photograph and the information was provided by Mrs Dulcie Caroline Woodburn

(née Harding 1898-1990 and younger sister of the two girls mentioned) in 1985.
